Working to protect and enhance the Lickey Hills and their environs

Wildfires have been very much in the news of late. There has been one major fire recently on Bilberry Hill. Fortunately, the site of the fire was accessible, allowing fire engines to get close to the seat of the blaze, so limiting its extent. Many thanks to the fire fighters from Bromsgrove for their excellent work to contain the blaze.
There have been several smaller fires, possibly linked to disposable BBQ’s.
The number to ring to report sighting of fires and BBQ’s in the Country Park is – 0121 454 7810
For serious fires – please ring 999.
The number of the Visitor Centre (working hours only) is 0121 303 2463.
Another number that can be rung – 0121 464 8728 –listed on Birmingham Council’s website as Park’s Emergencies

The final Balsam Bash this summer will take place on Saturday 29th August in the Country
Park.
This year, sessions have taken place every Saturday in June, July and August. We would like to thank all of the volunteers; members, families and friends who have given freely of their time to take part in this year’s Balsam Bashes. Many of this year's Bashes took place in Cofton Park which is particularly badly affected. The photo was taken at the last Cofton Park session on the 22nd August.
The Society has been organising Balsam Bashes for many years and for most of that time they have taken place in the Country Park. As a consequence, there are now limited patches where the balsam thrives there but these do tend to be in more challenging locations! Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see the years of hard work have been well worthwhile.

A new Information Board was unveiled at the end of May and it has met with a very positive response.
The previous board had been damaged by the weather and it was out of date due to changes that had
taken place over the years, especially with new trees being added to the orchard. The new board provides updated information and a revised plan of the orchard.
Many thanks to everyone who took part in this project and especially to Keith and Simon Woolford for their design and graphic skills which have guaranteed that the board looks very attractive and professional.

The National Fire Chiefs Council - NFCC has posted the following message:
"Most wildfires are preventable.
Avoid using disposable barbecues in open spaces, take litter home, and never discard cigarettes, matches or glass bottles where they could ignite dry vegetation.
Together, we can reduce the risk, protect our environment and support our emergency services during this period of heightened wildfire activity."
